Megg, S.A.G. (Screen Actors Guild) is a multi-talented deaf woman; she is an actress, musician (ASL signer / song interpreting), dancer, licensed esthetician, certified make-up artist for on screen and print.
1996 – 98: She won the title ‘Miss Deaf Oregon’ and her dance piece “Listening Through My Heart” won her the Best Talent Show during the Miss Deaf America Pageant in San Antonio, Texas.
1997 – 98: In Portland, Oregon, she had two speaking-roles with the Hearst Entertainment Film Company, “15 & Pregnant” and “Change of Heart”
1999: She moved to California at age 17 to pursue her dream and graduated from Make-Up of Hollywood in West Hollywood, California. She worked in the make-up industry as her side job while gaining intense knowledge and experience behind the scene at Sign World TV (now known as Sign World Media) with CJ Jones (CEO). She contributed her multi-talents to SWTV: Make-up artist, actress/performer and production assistant. She also performed a song in American Sign Language that was produced by SWTV for their internet music video streaming project. Then later in 1999, Megg was discovered by the National Theatre of the Deaf and signed her for their national tour for two years.
2001: She moves back to California to work at Deaf West Theater Co. as an Actress, in-school workshop program coordinator and educator in Los Angeles County schools. Later that year she starred in Deaf West Theater’s Tony Award winning play, “Big River”
2003: Megg had a beautiful daughter, Yamila Rose, who is also Deaf. After working in different deaf school programs in the Los Angeles area, she decided to move into the Bay Area for her daughter so that she can have the best education at the California School for the Deaf. This move also allows Megg to expand her make-up career. She continued her make-up study at San Jose Esthetic Academy for 2 years to get her License as an Esthetician.
Megg successfully owns her own mobile spa business, “MizHands On Spa”. Her goal is to provide her spa services; facials, waxing, electrotherapy, lash extensions, airbrush tanning & make-up on the side while she is not performing. You can check out her mobile spa business here.
2009: Megg gave birth to her second child, a beautiful boy name Kai, whom is also Deaf. With her past mothering experience with Yamila Rose, she felt more comfortable raising a deaf kid back down in the southern California area. This decision is made based on the demand for her as an actress and luckily she easily brought her mobile spa business with her.
2010 – Present: During her time as an educator and workshop coordinator, she had developed a burning passion to teach theatre, dance and directing for Deaf children all over the USA. Her ever increasing passion to provide a place and time for the Deaf children to see with their own eyes that there is hope to become anybody they want to be. A place where Deaf children can express and explore themselves through arts. Importantly, a time for them to build their self esteem. She knows what it’s like being a Deaf child, where she didn’t have any role models to look up to and believe that she could become anything she dreams to be. In return, it’s a blessing for her to give the Deaf an opportunity like this through arts in ways they never had before.
Megg has strong love for music and she knows a lot of Deaf people are not highly exposed with this. She brought a lot of musical plays through her directing opportunities and producing her own music videos where she translate the popular music’s lyrics into ASL for her Deaf audience. Her favorite quote “Music is what feelings sound-looks like”. She recently produced, wrote & performed with her daughter Yamila Rose, a music video that had a smashing ratings of 14 thousand views in 3 days! Please make some time to watch “I Don’t Need Your Cure” and share it with your friends and family. Megg is still creating music videos for her audience, they can be found here.
With Megg’s extensive Artistic background since the age of 5, she had never allowed her Deafness stop her from pursuing her dreams. She believes that someday the Hearing world will meet eye to eye and believe that with her talents, she will make a difference in others lives by developing her own projects, continue to become a successful performer, mother and make-pp artist/esthetician. Megg will always have a burning passion to be a positive role model for all Deaf & hard of hearing people and children in the world, especially for her two beautiful Deaf children, Yamila and Kai.
